NO REF, NO GAME.

Referees and match officals are essential to ensuring rugby is played fairly and safely. They uphold the rules and spirit of the sport, they maintain order on the field, they prevent dangerous play and ensure all players have an equal opportunity to compete.  The RFU offers courses, resources and pathways to support referees in their development, both on and off the field, providing a structure to learn the laws and hone skills in communication and descision-making.

Best Practice for Pre-Match Communication

Confirmation: Clubs are expected to confirm match details with the appointed referee at least four prior to the fixture to ensure all parties are aligned and prepared for the upcoming game. A phone call is best. If you use text, WhatsApp or Email please ensure you have a confirmation response from the referee to ensure the message was recieved.

Accurate Information: When confirming, please provide comprehensive details, including match location, kick-off time, team colours (in the event of colour clashes the Home team needs to inform the ref and make the appropriate arrangements in advance), and any other information, such as local road closures, that may assist the referee in their preparations.

Prompt Updates: In the event of any changes or cancellations, notify the referee and the Appointments Secretary immediately.
